I became bilingual after moving from HK to Canada ( both Chinese and English). Being able to speak 2 languages gives me the temptation to try to learn yet another one. I found out it's so much easier to learn Japanese if you understand English since a lot of their modern words are actually English ( of course there are French and some others ). Last year I spent 2 weeks in Japan and was able to talk to the locals after learnig Japanese for a few months on my own. After the trip I bought a whole bunch of books ( with CD recordings ) from HK and Taiwan and picked up a lot of the basic grammar. I then downloaded a lot of the Japanese drama with Chinese subtitle ( from this site right here ) and watch them whenever I can. I think I can do much better next time when I go to Japan. Any one wants to learn Japanese can try that too -- learn the basics then watch tons and tons of TV drama, It won't disappoint you!
